I’m Not Aging, I’m Being Renovated
I’m Not Aging, I’m Being Renovated: A Gen-X Maintenance Update
So, a little health update from the department of “Well, this is getting ridiculous.” 😂
I’m almost 61 years old, which means I come from the generation that drank from garden hoses 🚰, rode bikes without helmets 🚲, disappeared until the streetlights came on 🌙, survived metal playground equipment, shag carpet, cigarette smoke in restaurants, cassette tapes getting eaten by the stereo 📼, and having exactly three TV channels to choose from. 📺
I survived all that. 😎
And now my body has apparently decided it’s time for scheduled maintenance. 🔧
Apparently, We’re Doing Both Knees Now
My knees have officially reached the point where I need unloader braces on BOTH legs. 🦵🦵
That’s right.
Both.
Because apparently one orthopedic accessory wasn’t enough. We’re going full Six Million Dollar Man on a Gen-X budget now. 🤖
Then There Are the Wrists
Between the two of them, I’ve got two titanium implants and 21 screws holding everything together. 🔩🔩🔩
At this point, I’m not really aging anymore.
I’m being renovated. 🛠️
I’m basically one airport security scan away from having to explain that no, I am not carrying a toolbox.
I am the toolbox. 😂
And Now My Eyes Want In on the Action
After nearly 61 years, my eyesight has finally decided it would also like to participate. 👀
So yes.
I finally need glasses. 🤓
Apparently all those years of reading liner notes on cassette tapes, rewinding VHS tapes, staring at CRT televisions, and trying to read tiny print under a 40-watt lamp have finally caught up with me. 📼📺💡
The generation that once programmed a VCR without instructions is now holding a restaurant menu three feet away trying to find the sweet spot. 😂
If the font is smaller than 14-point now, I just assume it contains classified information. 🕵️♂️
The Current Inventory
- 🦵 Two knee braces
- 🦾 Two titanium wrist implants
- 🔩 Twenty-one screws
- 🤓 One pair of glasses
- 🎵 A growing collection of body parts that make noises they definitely did not make in 1987
- 🧰 One stubborn Gen-X attitude that still believes most problems can be solved with duct tape, sarcasm, a cassette mixtape, and pretending everything is fine until further notice
Getting Older Is Strange
You spend your younger years thinking 60 is ancient, and then suddenly you’re almost 61 thinking:
“Ancient? Hell, I’ve got stuff to do.” 😏
Sure, I make noises when I stand up now. 😂
Sometimes getting off the couch requires momentum, geometry, and the kind of preparation we once reserved for recording a song off the radio without the DJ talking over the intro. 📻🎶
Sleeping wrong can apparently cause an injury now. 😴
And every doctor’s appointment eventually produces the phrase:
“Well, at your age…”
Which is always comforting. 🙄
But I’m Still Here
Still working.
Still building things.
Still laughing. 😂
Still listening to music too loud. 🎸
Still being sarcastic. 😏
Still refusing to act my age because, frankly, I have no idea what 61 is supposed to act like.
Gen-X didn’t really come with a “mellow” setting. 😎
We came with:
Figure it out.
Walk it off.
Rub some dirt on it.
Don’t touch the thermostat.
Be home when the streetlights come on.
And whatever happens, keep moving.
So that’s pretty much my approach now.
🦵 Brace the knees.
🔩 Screw the wrists together.
🤓 Put the glasses on.
🎶 Turn up the music.
😂 Complain just enough to make it entertaining.
And keep going.
Because that’s the plan.
I’ll Keep Going Until I Can’t
I’ll keep going until I can’t. 💪
And even then, knowing Gen-X, I’ll probably look around and say:
“Fine. Hand me the duct tape.” 😂🧰
